You are not your job. You are not your body. You are not your followers, your bank balance, or your reputation. Long before any of that, you were defined by the God who made you, before you even took your first breath.
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you."
Jeremiah 1:5
That is the foundation. Everything else is built on top of it, or it crumbles without it.
The Identity Crisis of Our Generation
Almost everyone is chasing the same thing, a sense of worth, and the world offers a hundred places to look for it. People try to find themselves in a job title. In how they look. In status, money, ego. In followers and likes. In relationships. In what we achieve. We stack our identity on these things, and for a while it feels like enough. But every one of them can move, and when they do, there is nothing left to stand on. Even those who grew up online feel it: by 2024, nearly half of teens (48%) said social media was making life worse for people their age (Pew Research Center). We scroll through everyone else's highlight reel, and measure our worth against a version of life that is not even real, quietly deciding we need to step up our game.
I know this, because I felt it too. And for years, I built my identity on pleasing people. I needed to be liked, approved of, enough in everyone's eyes. I also found my worth in my workplace, in a title and in what I could do. And I looked for it in relationships and intimacy, hoping someone else could tell me who I was. Underneath all of it I felt unqualified. Not chosen. Just a normal kid from a small place who had to earn his way into mattering.
Then I had enough, and I laid it all at the feet of Jesus. He started removing the idols I had put before Him, one by one. The approval, the status, the relationships I had made more important than my Maker. He was not interested in competing with them. He wanted me to seek Him, deeply, genuinely, and openly. And when I did, He told me the truth I had been starving for the whole time.
He said otherwise.
What Scripture Says About You
You are made in the image of God.
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them."
Genesis 1:27
You carry the fingerprint of the Creator. Your value was not assigned by culture. It was stamped in by God the moment He made you.
You are loved beyond measure.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son."
John 3:16
Not the world in general. You, specifically. God considered your life worth dying for.
You are chosen and called.
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession."
1 Peter 2:9
Royal. Holy. Special. These are not motivational words. They are facts from the mouth of God.
You are new in Christ.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!"
2 Corinthians 5:17
Your past does not define you. It was nailed to the cross. With these scriptures, God put many more in the Bible. Download what God says about you here.
Living From Identity, Not For It
Here is what changes everything. You do not work to earn an identity, you live from the one God already gave you. You do not serve Him to become worthy; you serve Him because, through Christ, you already are. You do not perform to prove your value, and you do not need the world to define you. The Creator already did.
When the World Tries to Tell You Otherwise
There will still be days when failure whispers that you are not enough, when rejection says you are unwanted, when comparison shouts that everyone else is ahead of you. I still have them. Some mornings the old voices come back, telling me I am only as good as my last achievement. The difference now is what I do with them. I do not argue myself out of the feeling. I go back to the Word, not to hype myself up, but to remember what is already true.
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Psalm 139:14
Build your life on that. Walk through this world not as someone searching for an identity, but as someone who already knows exactly who they are. You are a child of God, and nothing the world says can change that.
So before the world gets its say, let one truth speak first. Our 'Chosen' sticker carries that single word, put it somewhere you will see each morning. And tell me in the comments: where have you been looking for your identity, and what is one lie you are ready to lay down? Let us remind each other who we really are.
